Efficency In Color

What is ColorInMotion?

ColorInMotion is a project funded by the Austria Wirtschaftsservice and should determine the technical and financial feasibility of a software application for digital colorization of black and white films.

Project goals

Project goals

  • Prototype
  • The main goal of the project is to develop a prototype for and application that allows a user to do interactive and semi-automatic colorization of digital B&W films and videos.
  • Market analysis
  • It is important to know if the market size and the expected return of investment is large enough to support developing the application. To find this out one task in the project is to do a market analysis.
Creative Impact

Creative impact

  • Utilization of old B&W film material
  • Almost half of the 120 year old film history was done in B&W. By colorizing the B&W films it is possible increase the audience for these films.
  • Authentic documentaries
  • There is a lot of demand of documentaries of the World Wars where a lot of material is in B&W. The colorization of these material would give a far greater immersion into the times of the wars. One example where this was done is "They shall not grow old" by Peter Jackson.
  • Artistic reinterpretation
  • The application developed in this project can give artist a new tool to reinterpret B&W film material into previously impossible new works.
  • Remake old classics
  • Due to the high effort when colorizing complete films in a good quality this was rarely done. This project could lead to an application that makes it possible to colorize whole films with good quality in a reasonable time.
Features

Features

  • Intuitive UI
  • The user interface of the application will be easy to use so that new users can quickly work with the software.
  • Efficient Workflow
  • The application will offer different interactive and semi-automatic tools that allow the user to colorize B&W material in an efficient way.
  • Intelligent Algorithms
  • Modern algorithms are used to implement intelligent tools that assist the users to reach the desired quality as quick as possible.
Benefits

Benefits

  • Lowering costs
  • By creating a more efficient workflow less operator time is needed for a given B&W clip which reduces the cost of colorizing this clip.
  • Increase throughput
  • An increased efficiency in the workflow increases the amount of B&W material that can be colorized.
  • New service
  • Companies from similar market segments like digital film restoration can offer colorization as additional service which increases the number of potential
